The quickest way to grow – especially when you’re young

The quickest way to learn something new, to improve yourself or to know what something is like is to be around the person you want to become.

Want to be an entrepreneur?
Intern or volunteer for an entrepreneur in the field you’re interested in.

Want to work in a particular industry?
Intern or volunteer for a professional with a decade or more experience in that industry.

Want to know what a particular job is like?
Intern or volunteer for a professional with a decade or more experience in that occupation.

Want to become a different kind of person?
Intern or volunteer for a person who exhibits the traits you want.

It’s the highest ROI when you’re young or looking to jump into something new.
Without realizing it, you’ll soak up a tremendous amount of information, habits and mental models.

You’ll likely sacrifice some short-term (3~12 months) earnings, but the following years will more than make up for that because you’ve significantly sped up your learning curve.

Get closer to the sun (i.e. the person you want to become).
Then, stay humble, follow the path you see your mentor take, and changes and improvements in your life will come more quickly than you can imagine.
