I came across this quote from Epictetus.
“Difficulties show a person’s character.”
I’ve heard that one before.
“So when a challenge confronts you, remember that God is matching you with a younger sparring partner, as would a physical trainer.”
This got me.
It puts everything in a new perspective.
Nothing groundbreaking, but for some reason, it hit me differently.
Perhaps it’s the sports analogy.
“Why? Becoming an Olympian takes sweat! I think no one has a better challenge than yours, if only you would use it like an athlete would that young sparring partner.”
The Stoics liked to view everything as an opportunity for growth.
Within your control?
Face it head-on.
Outside of your control?
Don’t pay any attention to it.
Whether you want a life of greatness, fulfilment or simply of comfort, viewing a challenge as a match with a younger sparring partner has value for everyone.
Not necessarily as a challenge to be overcome.
But as an understanding that everything in life can be viewed in a more positive and fun light – if you allow yourself to do so.
